When orphaned Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, she finds both purpose and passion in her growing attachment to the enigmatic Mr. Rochester. But Thornfield harbors a dark secret--one that threatens Jane's chance at happiness and tests the limits of her courage.
Ahead of its time with its explorations of feminism, morality, and faith, Jane Eyre endures as one of the greatest romance novels ever written.
Beautifully designed and enduringly relevant, this edition of Jane Eyre will captivate both devoted Brontë fans and readers discovering the story for the first time.
The story is deceptively simple: the entanglement of two families in a northern town called Aldworth. One, the Lockwoods, wealthy and powerful, in a position to patronise and help the second family, the poor Hunters, who have been left fatherless with a weak, ineffectual mother.
Though the thudding heart of the story draws the reader inexorably along, hoping for the meek to conquer the strong, it is a surprising book in many ways, not least for its subversive portrayal of family – the children are often the adults, the parents the untrustworthy, unwise ones, and Whipple makes it clear that what we call today the nuclear family is not the answer to happiness. But what may be most satisfying about the book is how the climax is reached as a result of character. This is twentieth-century British fiction at its very best.

Virginia Woolf’s A Writer's Diary, first published in 1953, consists of extracts from the diaries she kept from 1918-41, gathered together by her husband Leonard Woolf to show her in the act of writing, when ‘she reveals, more nakedly perhaps than any other writer has done, the exquisite pleasure and pains... of artistic creation.’
Because this is a writer’s diary – when Leonard Woolf went through the thirty manuscript volumes, which would then be published in full in five printed volumes between 1977 and 1984, he only selected passages that related to her intellectual life. The reason he did this – and it seems extraordinary looking back over sixty years – is that he wished to restore Virginia Woolf ’s reputation as a serious writer, since it was then at a very low ebb.
Famously, Virginia Woolf's work was not read by the general public or taught in schools or universities in the 1960s. Although there had been some critical books on her, for example Winifred Holtby’s in the 1930s and Joan Bennett’s in the 1940s, she was not rated. Few people read her, few literary critics were interested in her, and the general perception of her nowadays as the most important female writer of the twentieth century, perhaps the most important writer of the twentieth century, would have astonished her and astonished her husband.
Published by Persephone Books. Endpaper is taken from the original 1953 jacket design for A Writer's Diary by Vanessa Bell.
In this centenary edition of Dorothy Canfield Fisher's riveting 1926 novel set in small-town America, a widowed high-school teacher, Mrs Bascomb, finds herself mother-in-law to the very last person she would have chosen for her only son: a shoe-shop assistant named Lottie.
The theme of Her Son's Wife is Mrs Bascomb's slow acceptance of her own controlling nature, of her own failure to connect. Acceptance, and love for her grandchild, do lead to change, but of a quietly horrifying nature. As Canfield Fisher wrote to her agent: ‘The story turns on the development and strengthening of a character, in this case after 45, the age when most people are set for life. A woman of 45 meets calamity and struggles through great sorrow and misery, to an immensely deeper understanding and self-abnegation.’ But her deceit and conniving raise ethical questions which the reader has to wrestle with. Her Son’s Wife is a novel which involves the reader from the first line to the last.
The leitmotif is shoes. Lottie’s father had been nightwatchman in a shoe factory, she met Ralph Bascomb in a shoe shop. However, her fashionable, and eventually painful, shoes become a trap and subtly deprive her of agency: with echoes of Jane Eyre and The Yellow Wallpaper, the pain they cause confines her to the house. But ‘for heaven’s sakes! If a person isn’t going to be allowed to pick out her own shoes, what next? Somebody’ll be cutting up my food for me, I suppose.’
One contemporary writer commented about Her Son's Wife, ‘It is her masterpiece and it is also a masterpiece. It is a profound, subtle analysis of human character and human life and a very remarkable book. I predict that it will win the Pulitzer Prize for 1926. It deserves it.’ (Alas, it was won by Sinclair Lewis.)
Published by Persephone Books. Endpapers are taken from a 1927 dress fabric called Gentlemen Prefer Blondes that was designed by Ralph Barton for the Stehli Silks Corporation and printed on silk crêpe de chine. It was part of ‘Americana’, a range of dress fabrics that Stehli Silks commissioned from leading artists following the Paris Exhibition of decorative arts in 1925, which had an enormous impact when it toured the USA the following year, encouraging American designers to move away from floral patterns and towards designs that depicted contemporary American life in a more modern way.
First published in 1934, Crooked Cross describes, through the eyes of one ordinary family, the Nazis’ growth in power between December 1932 and June 1933. It is extraordinarily prescient, anticipating all the horrors they were about to inflict on the world.
The main focus of the novel is on disaffected German youth: it shows with great subtlety that by the early 1930s there was huge unemployment, and a corresponding feeling of futility, and that what the Nazis did so skilfully was to provide a sense of purpose. Crooked Cross is the best account we've read of why some young men who feel disaffected, lost or ignored turn towards authoritarian governments.
The heroine of the novel, Lexa, watches her brothers being seduced by National Socialism, as she observes her Catholic fiancé losing his job because he has a Jewish name and, by the summer of ’33, is deprived of basic human rights like sitting on a park bench. But despite the grimness of all this, the novel remains intensely readable as it implicitly asks the question: how could the country of Beethoven and Goethe, Freud and the Bauhaus, be descending into barbarism? Why would the rest of the world not intervene before it was too late?
When Crooked Cross was published in 1934 the Daily Mirror thought it ‘gripping and moving’, the Observer called it ‘a very good novel’, the Times Literary Supplement congratulated Sally Carson on ‘the delicacy of the love story which she has placed in this grim setting’ and the Coventry Herald thought it ‘a book everyone should read – and remember’. A year later it was turned into a West End play and then she wrote two sequels, The Prisoner (1936) and A Traveller Came By (1938). But with the outbreak of war, and Sally Carson’s death in 1941, her work was forgotten – until now.

Disguised as a translation of a rediscovered text by a Japanese writer, Taiwan Travelogue is a bittersweet story of love between two women, nested in an artful exploration of language, history and power.
Set in May 1938, the young novelist Aoyama Chizuko sails from Japan to Taiwan where her interpreter proffers tantalising glimpses of island life and helps her to taste as much of cuisine as her larger-than-life appetite can bear.
The Disappearers is Marlon James’s triumphant return to the Jamaica of A Brief History of Seven Killings – a place of heat and chaos, and of danger for anyone outside the heteronormal.
So when eight gay men meet for the first time, in Kingston in 1988, answering the casting call for an openly queer play, they are already taking a big risk. But that is nothing compared to what rains down on them when a mob descends on one of their rehearsals. By the end of this night, one man is dead, all are injured, and two subsequently disappear.
As the survivors heal, each man finds he must confront the bigotry and homophobia that the attack laid bare. Some try to forget; some embrace their rage; and some simply vanish – but all are forever scarred. As one of the victims puts it, ‘there’s a difference between when something ends and when something stops’.
And this story won’t stop until both the disappearers and the perpetrators have been tracked, along trails both hot and cold, and an ending reached.
Epic and intimate, violent and forgiving, The Disappearers is a tour de force which only Marlon James could have written – both an unflinching portrait of the hatred and shame faced by gay men in a society which refuses to accept them, and a deeply human story of acceptance and insight.
What makes a person want to be a tree?
Bren and his partner Caelyn are feeling at a standstill in their lives. One day they come across a video of people in the forest who believe that if they stand still for long enough they will transform into trees.
The idea is absurd. But it's spreading. Soon, people start to go missing and trees appear in unlikely places.
As cities decay and the world becomes greener, Caelyn becomes more and more convinced that arborescence is exactly what will save the planet from human destruction. Bren isn't so sure.
Drifting apart, Bren and Caelyn are forced to question what it really means to be human - and if they are ready to stand still.
A deeply moving novella that questions what it means to belong to a person, as much as to a place.

She is a curator, who spends her time dressing the rooms of historic buildings to bring them to life. But in the lush private quarters of a medieval palace, she finds herself so transfixed by the reign of an almost-forgotten King that the edges of her life begin to blur.
He is a reluctant ruler with no hunger for power, rushed to the throne after the untimely deaths of his older brothers. But it isn't long before whispers begin to fly around the court. And with the growing belief that the King is not fit for the throne comes the idea that another might rule in his stead.
May We Feed the King dances between the lives of a historical subject who risks the future of his kingdom and a woman who turns to the past to hide from her present.
Laced with desire and longing, it is a playful, stirring meditation on history and storytelling: on what makes a King 'Great', and a life meaningful.

Many stories are told about the five Mansfield sisters. They are haughty, thinking themselves better than their neighbours in the picturesque village of Little Nettlebed. They have taken the death of their grandmother hard.
They are liars, troublemakers, untamed and dangerous... Accounts of their behaviour differ, but the villagers all agree that the girls are odd. One long summer, a heatwave descends.
Bloated sea creatures wash up along the parched riverbed, animals grow frenzied, ravens gather on the roofs of those about to die. As the stifling heat grips the village, so does a strange rumour: the Mansfield sisters have been seen transforming into a pack of dogs. With the witch trials only a recent memory, hysteria sets in.
Slowly but surely, the villagers become convinced that something strange is taking root in Little Nettlebed. And when a bark finally leads to a bite, the sisters will be the ones to pay for it.
Visceral and richly atmospheric, The Hounding plunges its reader into 18th century Oxfordshire, where the power of a man’s word is absolute, and it is safer to be a wild animal than an unconventional young woman.

When a brush with the law pushes Red into a corner, he escapes their town to start a new life in England. As the years pass, they remain tethered to one another, a fragile thread holding their once fierce friendship together. When Róisín arrives in London, the promise of freedom, of reinvention, and of finding her dear friend calls.
But searching for Red leads Róisín to a truth darker than she could have imagined: when you go looking for someone you may uncover parts of yourself along the way that you’d rather stayed buried. And Red – bright, beautiful Red – might not want to be found at all.

A witty and humane account of one man, multiple jobs and what it means to live.
Hu AnYan has held nineteen different jobs since he graduated. He’s been a convenience store clerk, a bicycle salesman, a security guard and a delivery driver (among many other things). Every time the work gets punishing or the bosses too bossy, he moves on, from city to city, carrying with him nothing but his copies of Chekhov and Carver.
This is his story.
A runaway bestseller in China, I Deliver Parcels in Beijing is about what it’s like to try and make a living – and stay sane – in the gig economy. From the pecking order on a parcel-sorting factory floor to the perfect alcohol dose to get some daylight shut-eye before a punishing night shift, from the Kafkaesque bureaucracy of the hiring departments to the ideal layout of a delivery route, Hu illuminates the hidden lives behind the roles that keep our world going.
But he also shows how, through the liberating power of literature, he finds solace, and even freedom in his existence. Quietly radical, brimming with humanity and humour, this book asks: what does work really mean? What should it mean? And do any of us really know how to live?
The narrator of Attention-Seeking Behaviour thinks you should know about the body she found in the park. She thinks you should know about her sex life, which is fulfilling and systematic. She thinks you should know that she is a writer, that she is ‘complex, creative and nasty’. But above all, she thinks you should know that she is a compulsive liar.
Trying to break this habit for the sake of Normal Ben, an honest and uncomplicated man, she attempts a sincere reckoning with her long history of deception, its psychological roots and the terrible cost it has exacted on her relationships. But can we believe a word she says?
Funny, sexy, and politically astute, Attention-Seeking Behaviour is at once a personal confessional and a critical history of lie detection methods.
Blending fiction and non-fiction – memoir, novel and essay – it wields confession shamelessly while positively embracing the proximity of literature and lying.
Reading built the modern world. It helped create democracy, science and reason. Now, books are dying, and people everywhere are losing the ability to read deeply or think rationally.
The golden chain of knowledge linking reader to reader through history is breaking. The screen has replaced the page. Our free time has been colonised by addictive, infantilising slop.
A culture of distraction is replacing a culture of reasoned debate. As reading declines, thought becomes shallower and culture becomes simpler. Public life is becoming more emotional, more tribal, more irrational.
We are entering a post-literate society. And the world we knew is already beginning to disappear. Six hundred years after the invention of the printed book, it has never been more threatened or more irreplaceable.

Four men in a lifeboat. Two weeks without food. One impossible choice that would reshape the boundaries between survival and murder.
On May 19, 1884, the yacht Mignonette sailed from England on what should have been an uneventful voyage. When their vessel sank in the Atlantic, Captain Dudley and his crew found themselves adrift in a tiny lifeboat. As days turned to weeks, they faced an unthinkable choice: starve or resort to cannibalism.
Their decision to sacrifice the 17-year-old cabin boy Richard Parker ignited a firestorm of controversy. Instead of being hailed as heroes and survivors, Dudley and his crew found themselves at the centre of Regina v. Dudley and Stephens, a landmark murder trial that would establish the legal precedent that necessity cannot justify murder.
In Captain's Dinner, acclaimed journalist, Pulitzer Prize juror, and New York Times bestselling author Adam Cohen masterfully depicts both the harrowing weeks at sea and the sensational trial.

Make Believe is a book for adults about books for children, a rallying cry for art and imagination, and a celebration of the power of storytelling in all our lives.
Mac Barnett, the beloved, bestselling children's author and U.S. National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, urges us to think expansively about the potential of children's books-and the particular brilliance of young readers:
What if children are a great audience for art?
What if they are in fact better equipped to engage deeply with stories than adults?
What if humans' ability to appreciate art is, if not innate, awakened early in childhood?
Well, then we'd better do our best to make some good kids' books. Barnett has published more than 60 children's books, which have been translated into 30+ languages and have sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, winning many international prizes along the way.
Make Believe is his incisive, intimate, and timely invitation to approach children's literature not only as an art form worthy of deep study and criticism, but as a portal into the lives of the children. And at a time when we are faced with a national literacy crisis, he champions the profound joys of literature and the importance of reading for pleasure.
Written with humor and academic rigour, Make Believe reads like a letter from one's smartest and funniest friend.

A novel of secrets and female solidarity set in post-war Milan, by one of Italy’s most significant women writers. Translated by Julia Nelsen. It is 1946 and Milan is in ruins.
Camilla opens her illegally occupied attic to her extended family as they rebuild their lives among the rubble. The absence of men – lost to war, death, or abandonment – leaves the burden of survival to the women, who use the attic to begin to imagine fragile futures: Camilla works to carry the family toward dignity and normalcy; Lalla dreams of becoming a novelist to escape their grim reality; Regina, widowed by the war, pins her hopes on her infant daughter; Alba chases independence and love. Varying political ideologies, loyalties, and wartime secrets filter through the house, creating a thick net of tension. Fausta Cialente’s exquisite prose captures the frailty of the human heart in its desperate search for connection.
As the narrative roams from the thoughts of character to character, the residents of the attic consider their own complicity and moral compromises. Tender, thought-provoking, and devastatingly beautiful, A Very Cold Winter is about the impossibility of forgetting the past and the difficulty of living with it.

‘My dear children, I am more shaky than usual this year. The North Polar Bear’s fault. It was the biggest bang in the world, and the most monstrous firework there has ever been.
It turned the North Pole black!’ Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien’s children. Inside would be a letter in strange spidery handwriting and a beautiful coloured drawing or some sketches.
The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole:• How all the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place• How the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house into the dining-room• How he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden• How there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house! Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, and sometimes Ilbereth the Elf would write in his elegant flowing script, adding yet more life and humour to the stories. From the first note to Tolkien’s eldest son in 1920 to the final poignant letter to his daughter in 1943, this book collects all the remarkable letters and pictures in one enchanting edition.
No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by the inventiveness of Tolkien’s Letters from Father Christmas.

Across the field, funny, troubled Rita Simmons is also asleep, her head full of images of a past life her husband prefers to ignore. He's been up for hours, tending to the needs of the small dairy farm where he hoped to create a new version of himself, a project that's already faltering. WHERE DO YOU HIDE WHEN YOU CAN'T LEAVE HOME? AND WHERE, IN A FROZEN WORLD, CAN YOU RUN TO?
A gulp-it-down-in-one-sitting novel, The Winter Guest, from Sunday Times bestselling author, Sarah Moss, is an enthralling story about how the past will always come to find you in the end.
Tell me the worst thing you’ve ever done.
On Christmas Eve, in a hotel on Ireland’s west coast, a man and a woman meet for the first time. As a snowstorm gathers outside windows twinkling with fairy lights, they share a meal, pour wine, propose a toast. Janice and Gerry may be strangers to one another, but they each have a confession to make.
As the blizzard howls, the night will take an unexpected turn, and their conversation will have consequences far beyond the candlelit table . . .
In Winter Stories, we meet a teenager on the run from social services with her younger half-sister and half-brother in tow, a young single mother struggling to provide adequately for her daughter, and an ex-convict striving to overcome personal shortcomings and build a relationship with his son.
We watch these characters stumble, fall and climb to their feet again, even though the deck inevitably seems to be stacked against them.
With empathy and sensitivity, Ingvild Rishøi beautifully illuminates the vulnerability of the human condition.
In a time when levels of scepticism and distrust are rising, these stories remind us of the humanity that unites us all.
A once-in-a-generation series, Ali Smith's Seasonal Quartet is a tour-de-force about love, time, art, politics, and how we live now.
Winter? Bleak. Frosty wind, earth as iron, water as stone, so the old song goes.
The shortest days, the longest nights. The trees are bare and shivering. The summer's leaves? Dead litter.
The world shrinks; the sap sinks. But winter makes things visible. And if there's ice, there'll be fire.
In Ali Smith's Winter, lifeforce matches up to the toughest of the seasons. In this second novel in her acclaimed Seasonal cycle, the follow-up to her sensational Autumn, Smith casts a merry eye over a bleak post-truth era with a story rooted in history, memory and warmth, its taproot deep in the evergreens: art, love, laughter. It's the season that teaches us survival.
Here comes Winter.

A festive treat from a treasured comic writer. It's Christmas-time at Cold Comfort Farm and it's the worst sort of family gathering...
WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY ALEXANDER MCCALL SMITH.
The title story tells of a typical Christmas at the farm before the coming of Flora Poste.
It is a parody of the worst sort of family Christmas: Adam Lambsbreath dresses up as Father Christmas in two of Judith's red shawls. There are unsuitable presents, unpleasant insertions into the pudding and Aunt Ada Doom orders Amos to carve the turkey, adding: 'Ay, would it were a vulture, 'twere more fitting!''
In this glittering new clothbound edition of the beloved Christmas chiller, the gifts are unwrapped, the feast has been consumed and the fire is well fed - but the ghosts are still hungry.
Chill Tidings ushers in a host of ghastly phantoms and otherworldly intruders bent on ruining, or partaking in, the most wonderful time of the year.
With classic tales from Algernon Blackwood, Elizabeth Bowen, Charlotte Riddell and L P Hartley, jostling with rare pieces from the sleeping periodicals and literary magazines of the British Library collections, it's time to open the door and let the real festivities begin.
Welcome to this beautiful new edition of the beloved collection of Christmas nightmares that have been scaring readers since 2020.
With a new afterword by Tanya Kirk, this book celebrates the timeless tradition of cosying up during the cold winter nights whilst these dark tales send a chill down your spine.
Two dead bodies and a Christmas stocking weaponised. A Postman murdered delivering cards on Christmas morning. A Christmas tree growing over a forgotten homicide.
It's the most wonderful time of the year, except for the victims of these shocking and often elaborate murders. When there's magic in the air, sometimes even the facts don't quite add up and the impossible can happen -- and it's up to the detective's trained eye to unwrap the clues and put together an explanation neatly tied up with a bow.
Martin Edwards compiles an anthology filled with tales of seasonal suspense where the snow runs red, perfect to be shared between super-sleuths by the fire on a cold winter's night.
In a large Swedish forest, Beartown hides a dark secret…

Then the town is offered a bright new future. But it is all put in jeopardy by a single, brutal act. It divides the town into those who think it should be hushed up and forgotten, and those who'll risk the future to see justice done.
Who will speak up? Could you stand by and stay silent? Or would you risk everything for justice? Which side would you be on?

Carmen has always worked in her local department store.
So, when the gorgeous old building closes its doors for good, she is more than a little lost. But, short on options, she soon finds herself pulling into the snowy city just a month before Christmas.
What Sofia didn't say is that the shop is on its last legs and that if Carmen can't help turn things around before Christmas, the owner will be forced to sell. Privately, Sofia is sure it will take more than a miracle to save the store, but maybe this Christmas, Carmen might surprise them all...

While a book club meeting ending in a triple murder isn’t unprecedented, it is at least noteworthy. And this is no ordinary book-club-triple-murder either, as it seems to involve a librarian possessed by a chaotic entity who has broken through from another dimension and is hellbent on vengeance.
But who would want to summon such a thing? And - importantly - how is anyone going to be able to send it back?
As if that wasn’t enough to be going on with, there's a shocking revelation about a member of The Stranger Times team’s past. It will brings family together - which is, of course, part of what Christmas is all about - but not in a way that’s ever going to make it into a Hallmark movie.
Add demonically-possessed Santas, blood-thirsty books and the ghost of a legendary nightclub into the mix and it’s looking like an apocalyptic Christmas for the good folk at The Stranger Times .
Christmas Eve, 1943.
Anthony and Elva Pratt arrive in a snowy English village to run a murder mystery game - and instead discover a real murder. The Pratts had planned for festive cheer, despite the wartime shortages: with Elva's map of the hotel and Anthony's prop weapons to use as clues, the guests in their parlour game would move through the rooms to figure out whodunnit.
But when Anthony discovers the cook's sister Miss Silver beaten to death, they instead find themselves investigating a shockingly real crime. The hotel manager Mr Browning is trying to keep the peace but the guests are agitated, Colonel Colman is about to take over the hotel for the war effort - and the mysterious Mrs Threadgold hasn't been seen at all. In games, there's only one victim - but this is real life.
Can the Pratts puzzle out this Christmas mystery before it's too late?
Inspired by an Icelandic book-gifting tradition, this beautiful story, illustrated with full colour artwork throughout, and decorated endpapers, is the perfect gift for sharing during the Christmas period.
It was Christmas Eve in the little farmhouse. The air was full of good smells of spices and jam and hot cocoa.
No one was expecting any presents, but there would be leaf bread, and cookies, and Grandmother's embroidered tablecloth, and they would all do what they could to make the Yuletide bright. Picking his way home across the lava field, Tómas knows that this Christmas won't be quite the same - not without his Grandfather. But as the war draws closer, Tómas devises a plan to ensure his Grandfather's stories will still be at the heart of his family's Christmas - even if it means being braver than a boy ever dreamed he could be.
Donning his grandfather's jumper for courage, working hard at chores for neighbours, he takes his hard earned pennies to shop for presents - only to find all the shops empty of stock. This is war time and rationing. There is just one shop still open - a bookshop.
Inspired by the Icelandic tradition of Jólabókaflóðið, where books are given as gifts on Christmas Eve.

Vinyl is back! For some, it never really went away. But whether you are a life-long aficionado, a penitent former CD head or recent convert to the format, The Philosophy of Vinyl is a book aimed at enhancing your appreciation of the discs in your collection.
This book celebrates all the rituals of records: the sleeves, the sides played, all the rites of needles, fluff and cleaning cloths, and the smells of records and their covers.
Its pages include enough nuggets of technical information to satisfy hi-fi enthusiasts and plenty of quirky trivia on classic records, labels, recording studios, pressing plants and cover artwork to delight the novice record collector, and anyone filled with the nostalgia of a youth spent carefully turning the disc to play the other side.
It is a book that sends its readers back to their records with renewed love and affection, and hopefully inspires them to seek out new additions and find fresh ways to revel in their 45s, EPs, 12-inches and LPs as long as their turntables keep spinning, and the crackle of needle on vinyl ignites their senses.
At a time when it feels like every year buildings get larger and more impersonal, sheds remain a beacon of ergonomic simplicity. Maybe it's the nostalgia of the ancient huts from which humanity evolved, or the sense of focused calm produced by shutting yourself away in one, but around the world and across generations we have found comfort in our sheds. They are wooden repositories for our inner lives: cheap, multifunctional spaces ready to be filled with the passions, tools and ideas of the individual.
In these pages you'll find rotating sheds, sheds on wheels and holy sheds, as Alex Johnson uncovers the universal lure of these tiny structures. Also detailed are some of the big ideas these little huts have birthed, from inventions and philosophies to literature, art and increasingly eccentric answers to the question: what exactly can a shed be? The Philosophy of Sheds also includes a gazetteer of famous and unique sheds of the world and is illustrated with archival imagery from the British Library collections.

We all know that Santa makes everyone’s dreams come true every Christmas, but it turns out that he needs a little help getting into the holiday spirit himself.
Instead of letting Santa get right back to work after he returns home to the North Pole on Christmas morning, his loyal elves want to make sure he experiences the same Christmas cheer he provides for others. With the perfect tree, lots of delicious treats, and, of course, presents, Santa experiences the magic of Christmas for the very first time. Beloved children’s book creators Mac Barnett and Sydney Smith have unveiled Santa unlike ever seen before, and as a result, created a merry new Christmas classic.
When Santa arrives at a child’s house on Christmas Eve, does he go down the chimney feet-first or headfirst? What if he gets stuck? What if there’s no chimney? Maybe he slides under the door, as thin as a piece of paper? Or is it possible he pours himself through the tap? What happens once he’s inside?Mac Barnett’s iconic talent for earnest deadpan humour and Jon Klassen’s irresistibly funny art honour this timeless question with answers both ridiculous and plausible, mounting in hilarity as the night continues.
What makes a house a home? This sweet story, with jaw-dropping illustrations, is the perfect cosy tale for bedtime. Olivia lives in a house with a little red door. Mouse lives in an oak tree behind the house.
When a storm blows the oak tree down, Olivia tries her best to find a new house for her neighbour, but are any of the houses the right home? When Mouse loses his old oak tree home in a snowstorm, his neighbour Olivia offers many different options for a new house, but none are quite right. It is only when she offers a place in her own house with the little red door that it becomes a home for both of them. Illustrator Grace Easton brings her expressive character illustration and beautiful hand-painted scenery to a story of two lonely neighbours finding friendship in the face of a disaster.
22 die-cut flaps reveal details around the cosy setting, bringing dimension to a story sure to bring warmth to a cold winter’s bedtime.

Landmark new 90th anniversary edition featuring a wealth of charming illustrations from Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomins, published in English for the first time. Smaug certainly looked fast asleep, almost dead and dark, with scarcely a snore more than a whiff of unseen steam, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out on to the floor when he caught a sudden thin and piercing ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug’s left eye.
He was only pretending to sleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance! Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole in Bag End by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Although quite reluctant to take part in this quest, Bilbo surprises even himself by his resourcefulness and his skill as a burglar! This landmark new edition of The Hobbit presents J.R.R. Tolkien's full text with illustrations by Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomins, from a rare Swedish-language edition never before published in English.
Jansson’s tender, whimsical drawings illuminate Bilbo’s journey – from the comfort of Bag End to the riddled dark under the mountain – adding fresh enchantment and quiet humour to every page.

This story of two spoilt and lonely children, whose happiness is regained as they bring to life a neglected garden, has become the best-loved of all Mrs. Burnett's books, but it did not acquire universal popularity until long after its first publication in 1911 Although set in Yorkshire, it was inspired by the rose garden at Great Maytham Hall in Kent (which still flourishes) where its much-travelled author lived from 1898 to 1907. The story has many illustrators, bur none has surpassed Charles Robinson who first created in his pictures the romantic and mysterious atmosphere of Misselthwaite Manor and the locked, forgotten garden.
No children's library is complete without this beautiful Everyman's Library hardcover edition of the Brothers Grimm's original fairy tales.
Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Tom Thumb, and Snow White (Snowdrop) are among the jewels we owe to the German Brothers Grimm, who began in the first decade of the 19th century to seek out and listen to village storytellers. The best-loved of the tales they discovered have inspired generations and are now brought together with the marvellous pictures that in 1900 first established the reputation of one of the greatest children's illustrators of all time, Arthur Rackham.
Frank Baum set out to write 'a modernised fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nighmares are left out'. Published in May 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz had sold 100,000 copies by the following January, proving that this was exactly what his young readers wanted. The story of Dorothy, carried by a cyclone from a her uncle's Kansas farm to the Land of Oz, and her adventures on the yellow brick road with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, has been an firm favourite with children ever since. The original illustrations by W. W. Denslow, which are reflected in the film and stage versions, have often been imitated but never surpassed.
This classic of the English countryside, . first published in 1908, is a favourite with readers of all ages. As the late Margery Fisher wrote, 'Adults are sadly aware of the figure of Grahame himself, languishing in a city office and longing for the river: children respond to the fun, the anarchy of Toad and the entrancing detail as Grahame's son Alastair must have done when he listened to the bedside stories that became a book. ' The author invited Arthur Rackham to illustrate his book, but Rackham said he was too busy - a decision he was happily able to reconsider in 1936 when he was approached by the American publisher of the Limited Editions Club. The project, which he carried out with love and great care for the authenticity of detail, was his last: the drawings appeared first in the USA in 1939 and in Britian in 1950.
One of the great nineteenth-century folklorists, Joseph Jacobs collected stories from oral sources and made scholarly notes on their origin, but he deliberately recorded them in a plain and direct style which he thought suitable for children and which makes them 'supremely tellable'. First published in 1890, his famous collection includes all the well-known tales, such as JACK AND THE BEANSTALK and DICK WHITTINGTON, as well as British variants of stories common to many cultures. The illustrations by John Batten are taken from the first edition.
The most popular of all ghost stories was first published on 17 December 1843, and by Christmas Eve 6, 000 copies had been sold at a published price of five shillings. The story of Scrooge, a miser who becomes a different man when he is presented with visions of past, present and future by Marley's ghost, was an immediate success and has remainded so ever since. It is a book to read on Christmas Eve beside a blazing fire - and the best introduction to Dickens for young readers not quite ready for his longer novels. Arthur Rackham, master of the fantastic, illustrated the story in 1915.
When Kay gets a splinter of the wicked troll's magic mirror in his heart it becomes hard and cold - just like a lump of ice. Kay is abducted and bewitched by the chillingly beautiful Snow Queen and his loyal sister, Gerda is prepared to face anything to find her brother and bring him home. So, she undertakes the nightmarish journey to the Snow Queen's icy labyrinth. . . .
Master storyteller Roald Dahl is by far the most popular children's writer of the late twentieth century, and The BFG (the Big Friendly Giant), recently adapted for the stage with great success, is set to become a claasic of its period (it was first published in 1982) This story of a vegetarian giant who disapproves of eating children has all the Dahl ingredients of humour, irreverence and verve that have made readers of countless youngsters. The humour is perfectly matched by Quentin Blake's irresistible drawing.
From the Eastern folk tales that make up the vast collection known as THE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS certain stories - of Aladdin, Sindbad and Ali Baba - have become everlasting favourites with children and a magical ingredient of Christmas pantomine. First introduced to Europe in the early eighteenth century by the French orientalist, Antione Galland, who translated and bowdlerized the stories to suit contemporary taste, this edition presents the fourteen best-known tales selected from an English text of 1821. The illustrations are reproduced from a larger collection in 1899. William Heath Robinson then at the start of his career, was commissioned with four others and his drawings (much the best) reveal a gentle, romantic charm that has been forgotten in the success of his later, purely comic work.
Everyone knows Pinocchio, the walking, talking wooden puppet carved from a table leg. Pinocchio, an endearing scamp, is always getting himself into trouble. But it isn't the sort of trouble most kids get into. Skiving off school, he is kidnapped by a puppeteer, robbed by a Cat and Fox, and persuaded to visit an earthly paradise where naughty children have perpetual fun - and turn into donkeys. Sold to a circus, then to a man who tries to drown him for his donkey-skin, he miraculously turns back into a puppet and goes in search of his 'father' (whom he must rescue from the belly of a giant dogfish ...).
Throughout these manic adventures he is haunted by the ghost of a Talking Cricket he has crushed to death for giving good advice, and watched over by his personal guardian fairy. All the while, Pinocchio dreams of becoming a real boy. Told with wit and humour, his story is also a moral fable about making the right choices, and what it is to be a loving human being.
Pinocchio is an astonishing work of fantasy which has been toned down and sentimentalized over the years, not least by the Walt Disney film. Everyman returns to a beautifully illustrated early translation of 1916 which captures the vivid inventiveness of Collodi's original.

For nearly 2,000 years Istanbul has been one of Europe's greatest cities. Under its former name, Constantinople, it was the capital of two mighty empires - the first (from 330) ruled by Roman and Byzantine emperors and the second (1453-1922) by Ottoman sultans. During these two periods, the city developed different but coherent traditions of art and design.
Lavishly illustrated with objects including sculpture, ivories, manuscripts, icons, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and weapons, this publication traces the challenges and advantages of the city's geographical location, the religious currents that influenced the nature of its art, the aims of the ruling courts in their artistic patronage, and a rich urban culture as shared by a remarkably diverse population.

The creative brilliance of Chanel – from Coco Chanel herself to Karl Lagerfeld – as seen by the greatest photographers of their times. Gabrielle Chanel was one of the most influential fashion designers of the twentieth century. She was years ahead of her time and her clothes and accessories have remained eternally chic, creating a look for her era and beyond.
Chanel’s influence is demonstrated here by celebrating the key elements that defined her style, through inspired pairings of classic and contemporary photographs. Featuring images from Chanel’s own time with more recent contemporary creations by the visionary Karl Lagerfeld, the resonance between archive and contemporary photographs becomes sharp, vibrant and telling. The vocabulary of Chanel’s style – the little black dress, baroque inspirations, androgynous chic – is revealed and interpreted by comparing original forms from the 1920s with the full range of their later expressions through every fashion era up to today.
Images by the modern greats of fashion photography display the triumphs of one of the world’s most visible and distinctive brands: Edward Steichen, Horst P. Horst, Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, Karl Lagerfeld, Peter Lindbergh and Mario Testino are among the galaxy of ultra-gifted photographers whose work appears in this volume.

The definitive monograph on the internationally acclaimed photographer turned Hollywood filmmaker, this volume explores the distinctive approach to portraiture that has shaped every facet of her practice. From her earliest photographs to her record-breaking feature film Fifty Shades of Grey, Taylor-Johnson has consistently investigated the boundaries between still and moving images, using both to create bold, psychologically rich portraits and self-portraits. Drawing from extensive archives across her full range of media, the book captures the evolution of her vision—from the acrobatic vitality of her iconic early “floating” self-portraits to the quiet intensity of her celebrated Crying Men series, as well as intimate images made on set and behind the scenes of her film work.
Together, these pictures reveal a career-long inquiry into what constitutes a portrait and how identity can be expressed, staged, disrupted, or reimagined. Curated and accompanied by new writing by Taylor-Johnson herself, the book marks the artist’s renewed focus on photography. Published in tandem with a new series of self-portraits, it offers an expansive, deeply personal look at an artist whose innovative engagement with image-making continues to shape contemporary visual culture.
From brutalism to modernism, via futurism – the Socialist Hotel is a unique architectural and cultural phenomenon that is collectively documented in these stunning photographs for the first time. Would you check in to a Socialist Hotel from an era when hospitality came second to ideology? These state-constructed buildings were used by visiting government workers, ordinary citizens – and even the occasional capitalist guest from the West. Today they are a fascinating legacy of a Soviet architectural, social and cultural idiosyncrasy.
This epic photographic project – spanning 153 hotels across 31 countries – chronicles the architecture of hospitality and leisure in Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet space. Many were built in imposing styles: brutalist and modernist structures emphasising scale, functionality and the power of the state. Quirkier constructions used mosaics, tiles and stained glass as cultural references, to reflect the traditions of individual countries.
Collected here for the first time are an amazing range of examples, from the grand Socialist Realism and neoclassical details of the Stalinist era (such as the Interhotel, Georgia) and the Soviet Modernism that marked a shift away from excess towards austere, concrete structures (Hotel Traian, Romania) to the futuristic and gravity defying (Sevan Writers’ House, Armenia). As socialism waned the hotels became privatised, increasingly undergoing modernisation or even demolition, to be replaced with global brands. Socialist Hotels is a unique survey of a contemporary Soviet architectural diaspora, documenting remaining examples of this disappearing phenomenon.
An exquisite visual and lyrical portrait of Susie Cave that unites the creative talents of four icons – celebrated writer and musician Nick Cave, renowned photographer Dominique Issermann, superstar designer Irma Boom and Susie Cave herself.
Nick Cave’s profound devotion to his wife Susie is present in the images he has crafted through words and lyrics since they met in 1997. Their longstanding friend, photographer Dominique Issermann, has spent years with Susie attempting the same elusive task on camera.
The result is a mirror held up to an ethereal presence, whose form beguiles and evades the lens: there are many characters within, many Susies to record, beginning in the early days of Nick and Susie falling in love. In her own words, the role Susie feels most true to is that of mother. This book is also an extraordinary testament to mothering – encompassing both the devastating loss of a beloved child and the deep comfort found in the one who remains.
It opens up a visual account that was previously held close, and casts light on a transformative point in the family’s lives. Reflections from Nick and Susie centre their adoration and faith in each other, and the strength gained through their friendship with Issermann, whose camera they have trusted to capture even the most intimate family moments. This is a book to cherish: it affirms faith in art, enchantment, beauty and the strength of the human spirit.
It is a visual ode to love, to family and to Susie.

Nestled within the dark heart of the South American interior is a place which evades all forms of human comprehension. A raw, primordial world still thriving in stubborn isolation despite centuries of humankind’s daring exploits. The Guiana Shield - a gateway to some of the oldest geological formations on our planet, nearly two billion years in the making, filled with ancient landscapes and relic life forms straight out of a fantasy novel.
When in 1912 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published his famous story about a group of explorers visiting a mysterious plateau, it was given a new name - “The Lost World”. In Rapture, photographer and naturalist Mateusz Wrazidlo presents his lifelong obsession with this mysterious cradle of South American biodiversity. It is a sumptuous letter of appreciation dedicated to a realm where fantasy and reality intertwine.
With expedition photographs, personal reflections and quotes from historical accounts of explorers, Rapture takes us on a journey through an incredible diversity of environments and landscapes, ranging from the stifling humidity and heat of the Amazon selva, through sun-scorched grassy highlands, the cold, misty cloud forests, to the mystical, dark and eerily silent summits of the tepui plateaus.
The ultimate guide to the magic and mystery of photography, featuring the landmark photographs, inventions, innovations, exhibitions and publications that changed the way we see the world.
Photography has not simply changed how we capture the world: it has changed how we view it, structuring our very ways of seeing. This ambitious publication, timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the first-ever photograph, brings together photographs from leading image-makers – including Zanele Muholi, Andreas Gursky, Man Ray, Sebastião Salgado, Hannah Höch, Barbara Kruger and Edward Steichen – alongside unexpected selections.
From the earliest 19th-century experiments in fixing light on paper, photography has blossomed and proliferated to a point where some 1.9 trillion photographs are snapped annually. Photographs are now at the core of our image-dominated culture. This is Photography: The First 200 Years carves a cohesive, compelling path through this dizzying mass of information.
Presented chronologically, the book showcases key photographs and objects year by year, each one accompanied by a short text entry offering historical, technical or critical context. Interleaved throughout are longer thematic texts by contributing writers, as well as extracts from the writings of photographers and major thinkers on the subject, bringing a depth of understanding to the principal genres and developments in photography. Alongside pivotal and instantly recognizable photographic works – from Eadweard Muybridge’s motion studies to Rosalind Franklin’s DNA imaging, and from the documentary work of Robert Frank to Cindy Sherman – This is Photography records the objects, cameras, technical developments, exhibitions and publications that have shaped the medium, making this an essential resource for anyone interested in photography.

The never-before-told story of Peggy Guggenheim's formation as a gallerist, collector and patron of the avant-garde, amply illustrated with artworks and archival materials
A groundbreaking work of art historical scholarship, The Making of a Collector is the first-ever volume dedicated to Peggy Guggenheim's experience as a burgeoning art collector in London, culminating in the opening of her first gallery, the Guggenheim Jeune.
Over the course of 18 months, from January 1938 through June 1939, the gallery was a beacon for the avant-garde movements of the era, hosting over 20 exhibitions, including Vasily Kandinsky's first solo show in London and a monographic exhibition of work by Jean Cocteau.
This volume elucidates her network of influential friends-from Marcel Duchamp to Samuel Beckett and Mary Reynolds-who helped shape her vision and showcases key works from her pioneering exhibitions alongside similar works from the same period by artists such as Eileen Agar, Salvador Dalì, Barbara Hepworth, Rita Kernn-Larsen, Piet Mondrian, Henry Moore, Cedric Morris and Sophie Taeuber-Arp.
Replete with archival material, the book bears testimony to the period of intense experimentation and cultural vibrancy leading up to World War II.
A self-described "art addict," Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979) was an American art collector who helped establish Cubism and Surrealism through gallery shows on both sides of the Atlantic. Her collections are now held by the Guggenheim Foundation.

“The deeper the white man went into Africa, the faster the life flowed out of it, off the plains and out of the bush...vanishing in acres of trophies and hides and carcasses.” — Peter Beard
A landmark publication on Africa, The End of the Game combines Peter Beard’s salient text and remarkable photographs to document the overpopulation and starvation of tens of thousands of elephants, rhinos, and hippos in Kenya’s Tsavo lowlands and Uganda parklands in the 1960s and ’70s. Researched and compiled over two decades, and updated several times since with new material, this is Beard’s essential book—a powerful and poignant testimony to the damage done by human intervention in Africa.
His own images and writings are supplemented by historical photographs of, and quotations from, the enterprisers, explorers, missionaries, and big-game hunters whose quest for adventure and “progress” were to change the face of a continent: Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Courteney Selous, Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Philip Percival, J. A. Hunter, Ernest Hemingway, and J. H. Patterson.
This new edition includes an interview with conservationist Dr. Esmond Bradley Martin, as well as essays from previous editions by renowned writer Paul Theroux and ecologist Dr. Richard M. Laws, and contributions to the afterword by agronomist Dr. Norman Borlaug.
Touching on such themes as distance from nature, density and stress, and loss of common sense, this seminal portrait is as resonant today, amid growing environmental crises, as it was a half century ago.

With 2.5 million copies in print, each cloth-bound volume in the official and authorized Catwalk series is produced in close collaboration with the world's top fashion houses. These treasure troves of inspiration are must-have references for all fashion fans and professionals.
Ralph Lauren debuted his first women's runway collection for Fall 1972 with a show that made his mark instantly, highlighting his exquisite tailoring and uncanny ability to mix opposites elegantly. Taking inspiration from New England’s rusticity, the West’s natural beauty and Hollywood’s glamour, Lauren's designs are a gold-standard for timeless American style with panache. This book celebrates more than 50 years of Lauren's creations, which have garnered many awards, made him a much-loved global brand and influenced the way women dress all over the world.
Ralph Lauren famously launched his menswear business in 1967 with an audacious tie collection, taken up by Bloomingdale’s, from which his Polo brand quickly developed. This became, and has remained ever since, a benchmark for polished tailoring with rugged utility. With his dual collections of 1972, Lauren began his rise in the world of women’s fashion; fourteen years later he opened his first Paris store on Place de la Madeleine, an affirmation of his ranking with the world’s most famed couturiers.
His consistent desire to create ‘a way of dressing that redefines the meaning of timelessness’ has made his label a by-word for luxury and class – as one critic said, Ralph Lauren ‘made it possible to use the words slinky and tweed in the same sentence without risking ridicule’. Complete with an introduction, designer biography and collection texts by Bridget Foley, this book offers a unique opportunity to explore the work of a great American couturier and creator of one of the world’s most celebrated fashion houses.

Loosely following the flow of the river from 17,000 feet to the mouth 4,000 miles downstream, he captures astonishing biodiversity, novel wildlife behavior and unique ecologies of rarely glimpsed species. Equal parts photojournalism and art, this lavish book will take readers on a breathtaking visual journey to one of the wildest places left on the planet.
The Royal Festival Hall (RFH) - an important example of modernism in architecture and one of London's best-loved buildings - was built as a beacon of hope and renewal after the Second World War, and quickly became popular. In this new book, a selection of contributors - architects, technicians, musicians, historians and cultural programmers - tell the varied stories of the building and the people who use it. The book is illustrated with photography specially commissioned from renowned architectural photographer Edmund Sumner, and contains 21 written contributions on different aspects of the RFH, from its history as a piece of architecture to the story of the famous organ, from the approach to literature and spoken word to the life of the production team.
The building's emergence as a destination for all, whether to enjoy a performance by a world-famous symphony orchestra, a dance class, a poetry reading or just a cup of coffee, is considered in the context of the intentions of its original planners and those who have led, maintained and refurbished it since. This book offers an invaluable record of the history of this celebrated building in the first 75 years of its life, and looks to the future as a centre of cultural programming - both weathering and shaping change - for many more decades to come. Published to coincide with the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Festival Hall.
Written by architects musicians, historians and cultural programmers who have been closely involved with the building and its renovation.

This elegant collaboration pairs Michael Kenna’s luminous black-and-white landscapes with Pico Iyer’s contemplative prose, tracing the parallels of two lives lived in motion. Though they didn’t meet until they were both in their sixties, photographer Michael Kenna and writer Pico Iyer had been unknowingly following similar paths for decades. Both were born in England, studied near Oxford in the 1970s, moved to the U.S.
West Coast, and fell in love with Japan. This book brings their work together in a profoundly personal collaboration: more than sixty of Kenna’s prints, each accompanied by an essay both from Iyer and Kenna himself. Kenna’s work—minimalist, often made in long exposure—captures fleeting moments of calm and clarity: a fog-bound canal in Venice, a deserted jetty in Mallorca, a line of trees dissolving into snow in Hokkaido.
Spanning fifty years and five continents, these photographs offer meditations shaped by light, shadow, and quiet transformation. In prose that mirrors the restraint and depth of the images, Iyer writes about travel, childhood, coincidence, and the invisible threads that connect us. Beautifully printed and designed for slow reading and close looking, Same Sun Same Moon is a book for art lovers, writers, travelers, and anyone drawn to the subtle interplay of image and word, solitude and connection.
A wonderful start to any clothbound collection, these three pocket-sized classics all offer contrasting but beautiful insights into life and humanity.

For more than two centuries, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has charmed readers with its wit, unforgettable characters, and keen social commentary on love, marriage, and class.
Now, this beloved classic is presented in a keepsake edition designed to be as enduring as the story itself, featuring:
A deluxe hardcover with Laci Fowler's distinctive hand-painted artwork, enhanced with embossing and gold foiling
Story-inspired details woven into the cover design for fans to discover
Decorative interior pages with memorable quotes sprinkled throughout
A matching ribbon marker and gold page edges for a sophisticated finish
At the heart of Austen's most popular novel is the spirited Elizabeth Bennet, whose sharp wit and independent spirit clash with the proud and enigmatic Fitzwilliam Darcy. Their unlikely romance unfolds in a tale of misjudged first impressions, clashing social expectations, and the ultimate triumph of love built on respect and understanding.
Part of the Painted Editions, this volume is perfect for Jane Austen devotees, collectors of fine editions, and fans of the many adaptations this timeless story has inspired. A must-have for any library, this edition ensures Pride and Prejudice will continue to delight readers for generations to come.
