Women in Translation Month

Translated fiction is being discovered more and more, both globally and within our bookshop. Promising stories that will inform, inspire and intrigue; translated fiction broadens our understanding of the world.

Women in Translation Month is celebrated every August, with the hopes of highlighting and honouring the stories told by talented female authors from across the globe. Let this post be your sign to pick up a book and celebrate. To help you in your decisions, we have curated a selection of titles as a starting point (though there are far too many to choose from).

‘All My Love’ by Agnes Lidbeck is the 50th novella published by Periene Press – a publisher that specialises in storytelling from across of the world. Originally published in Swedish, this book closely inspects the lives of two couples and what ultimately sets them apart. Truths are buried and can only stay hidden so long. Around these relationships, the country is changing and people are disappearing. An important novella of political unrest and the lives it disrupts.
‘Spanish Beauty’ by Esther García Llovet is published by Foundry Editions, a publisher that prioritises sharing stories told from across the borders and broadening readers’ perspectives. ‘Spanish Beauty’ is translated from Spanish and tells the story of one man’s hunt for a lighter through the underbelly of Benidorm. A cinematic read with an unforgettable cast of characters. The perfect gritty read to take away with you this summer.
